MoodleMoot 06 Day One

Well day one at MoodleMoot (a moodle conference) in Milton Keynes is over and its nice to get out of the hot house. There have been a number of presentations that I have been to throughout the day.

Niall Sclater from the Open University discussed their adoption of Moodle and how it fits into their plans. They are currently developing an e-portfolio system which could be out in February of next year. They are also working on changing the roles so that students could be locked out of forums but still take part in the rest of the course. They are also working on giving rights to parents.

After that it there were sessions based on where Moodle is used. I followed the schools path.

There were a number of sessions dealing with how Moodle is used from a simple portal for Primary school teachers in the US. The teachers had a Moodle course named after them so their students could find it easily. The teachers used it as a simple communication tool, later getting into using assignments and forums.

Art teachers showed how they used it for art courses at both KS2 and KS4. The students used the forums extensively to show and review each others work. It was raised that the contributions that students make to commenting on other students work should be somehow recognised.

In the afternoon we were shown how the OU are looking at opening up some of their content and changing their business plan.

Finally a small enterprise in Virginia is currently developing an open creative commons repository which will link seemlessly to Moodle allowing teachers to search for predesigned course modules and insert them in their courses.
